SSBS hosted a two-day laboratory animal workshop entitled "Animal Experimentation and the ethical use of laboratory animal for research" on July 18-19, 2024. Dr. Santosh Koratkar faculty at SSBS conducted the workshop, and Mr. Manoj Kadam, Nilesh Chakankar, and Ganesh Takale assisted in the hands-on training. The event engaged 29 attendees, including M. Sc. (Nutrition and Dietetics), M. Sc. Biotechnology (by Research), and Ph. D. scholars. Animal welfare, its importance, the basis of ethical guidelines, national laws, and statutory bodies with specific guidelines, facility layout and registration with CCSEA, animal care, and husbandry practices, maintaining various records, various experimental techniques, and handling and restraining of a laboratory animal, various drug administration routes, and sample collection methods in pre-clinical testing were all covered during the workshop.
The workshop aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical considerations and best practices used laboratory animals for research. This knowledge would be valuable for their future life sciences and research work including laboratory animals.

A Biomedical Waste Management workshop was organised at the Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences (SSBS), Symbiosis International (Deemed University), on 21 March 2025 at the Seminar Hall, 4th Floor, SIT Building, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. The workshop aimed to enhance awareness and strengthen compliance with biomedical waste management practices among laboratory staff and housekeeping personnel.
The workshop began with a review of the current biomedical waste collection, segregation, storage, and disposal practices followed at SSBS. During the discussion, certain gaps in documentation and compliance were highlighted. Participants emphasized the importance of adhering to the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The need for timely renewal of authorization from the State Pollution Control Board was also discussed and explained by Dr Santosh Koratkar.
Challenges related to improper waste segregation in laboratories were addressed, and the strict implementation of the colour-coded bin system was reinforced. The importance of regular training programs for laboratory staff and housekeeping personnel, particularly contractual employees responsible for waste collection, was highlighted by Mr Patel and Kharat from Life Secure Enterprises Ltd.
It was decided that biomedical waste collection would be carried out twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Housekeeping staff will conduct regular checks to ensure proper bin labelling and segregation, and colour-coded waste bags will be procured in bulk and distributed to all laboratories to improve waste management practices. All staff, students, JRF, SRF and housekeeping staff attended the workshop.
